Augusta, the state’s second oldest city established in the mid-1700s by Georgia’s founder James E. Oglethorpe, anchors a stretch along the Savannah River, the border between northeast Georgia and South Carolina. In fact, prior to the taming of Florida, Augusta was a preferred resort and winter home area for wealthy snowbirds such as oil magnate John D. Rockefeller. The Cotton Exchange Building showcases artifacts from Augusta’s cotton market heyday during the late 1800s. Central to the pre-Civil War plantation era, Augusta’s museums and surrounding countryside provide glimpses of authentic southern plantation life and customs, with remnants surviving to this day.
